Ernst & Young has said the Saudi holy city of Madina is the best performing city in the Middle East for hotel investment, Saudi Gazette has reported. In the first quarter of 2012, Madina had the highest growth in average room rate, increasing 14.9% to $170, while occupancy was also up 15% to an average of 72% in the same period, E&Y said. “The reason of it having the highest ROI is due to the fact that there is a growing demand to visit Madina. Nevertheless, unlike Makkah, fewer developments are being set up there and this creates a lack of supply of hotel beds, which drives up the price,” Basel Abu Alrub, managing partner of Dubai-based travel agent Utravel commented on the report.

Oman Drydock Co (ODC) is set to shortly launch a state-of-the-art reception plant for slops and sludge oily wastewater and residual waste oil collected from ships at its ship repair yard in Duqm, Oman Daily Observer has reported. The facility, financed by the transport and communications ministry, ODC, with its strategic partner Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), will operate the facility. In addition to its 10,000 cubic metre storage capacity, the plant is equipped to discharge treated wastewater at the rate of 30 cubic metres per hour, making it capable of handling the waste streams of even Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC), said Nishant Bhavsar, Director of Unique Tile Services, which implemented the project on behalf of the Omani government.

Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched two new bus routes that will connect TECOM free zones Dubai Internet City (DIC), Dubai Media City (DMC) and Dubai Knowledge Village (DKV) to Karama and Discovery Gardens, respectively, Wam has reported. The buses operating on the new routes would reduce the commuting time for office-goers within the free zones by almost 50%, the RTA said. The launch of Route 83 and Route 85 came in response to a survey conducted by the RTA in collaboration with TECOM Investments in September-October 2011.
